The Finished Floor Starts Before the First Board Goes Down
The Finished Floor Starts Before the First Board Goes Down.
The finished flooring gets all the attention. But demolition, substrate condition, preparation and layout can determine the quality of the installation long before the room looks finished.
Everybody sees the finished floor.
That's the part people photograph.
That's the part the homeowner walks on.
And that's usually the part people use to decide whether a flooring job looks good.
But by the time the finished floor is installed, a lot of the decisions that affect the job have already been made.
The old flooring has been removed.
The substrate has been exposed.
Transitions and elevations have become visible.
The installer can finally see what was actually hiding underneath the previous finished surface.
🔨 Demolition isn't just destruction.
Removing the existing flooring does more than clear the room.
It exposes the conditions underneath it.
That's when you can start looking at what you're actually going to install over instead of what you hoped was underneath the old floor.
Depending on the project and flooring system, that can mean paying attention to substrate condition, damaged areas, old adhesive, previous repairs, transitions, elevations and other conditions that weren't visible before demolition.
Demo gives you information.
👀 The ugly stage is where you learn something.
There's a reason we keep showing demolition and construction photos in The Contractor Journal.
They aren't always the prettiest pictures.
But that's when the building starts telling you what happened before you got there.
A finished surface hides previous workmanship.
Once it's removed, you get a chance to see what you're actually dealing with.
Flooring demolition from the jobsite.
A photograph captures one moment. Video gives you a better look at what the project actually looks like while the work is happening.
▶ WATCH FLOORING DEMO →Preparation isn't the exciting part.
Nobody remodels a house because they're excited about substrate preparation.
They want the new floor.
But the finished material doesn't make the conditions underneath it disappear.
That's why preparation has to be treated as part of the installation, not as the annoying thing standing between demolition and putting the new material down.
That's kind of the point.
From construction to finished space.
Why we're showing you this.
Anybody can post a photograph of a finished floor.
We will too.
But The Contractor Journal exists because we think the rest of the project is worth showing.
The demolition.
The preparation.
The things we find.
The decisions that happen before the finish.
That's where construction actually happens.
