Welcome to The Contractor Journal
Construction looks different when you know what you're looking at.
Welcome to The Contractor Journal — real projects, real problems, finished work, and the construction that happens before everything gets covered up.
We want to show you what happened before it looked finished.
Because that's usually where the interesting part is.
Construction companies love finished photographs.
And there's nothing wrong with that. We do too.
A finished kitchen, new roof, custom cabinet installation, restored floor or completed outdoor space is what the homeowner ultimately hired somebody to build.
But a finished photograph leaves out most of the story.
It doesn't show you what was behind the wall.
It doesn't show you what the roof deck looked like once the old roofing came off.
It doesn't show you the substrate underneath the flooring.
It doesn't show the waterproofing behind the tile.
It doesn't show the framing connection that eventually disappears behind drywall.
And it doesn't show all the moments where somebody on the job has to stop, look at what's actually there and decide what happens next.
The work underneath earns it.
This is where we're headed.
The Journal is going to spend a lot of time showing demolition, preparation, structure and everything underneath the finish. But all of that work has a destination.
Built for the space. Installed as part of the project.
Custom details are part of the construction story too.
It's the result of it.
This is the other side of construction.
Not every photograph belongs in a glossy portfolio.
Some of the most useful photographs are the ugly ones.
The tear-off. The demolition. The open wall. The damaged material. The framing before it disappears.
Not theory from behind a desk. Work from the field.
The Contractor Journal is where we're going to document those things.
Some posts will start with one photograph from a job.
Others will follow an entire project from demolition through reconstruction.
Sometimes we'll use jobsite video. Sometimes we'll break down a construction detail and explain why it matters.
Sometimes we'll show something that failed and talk about what we found once we opened it up.
What we actually find.
Real jobsite conditions, discoveries, damage and repairs.
The work that disappears.
Framing, waterproofing, substrate prep, roof decking and structure.
Why things fail.
Water intrusion, deterioration, preparation problems and previous repairs.
The reason behind the method.
Why preparation and construction sequence matter to the finished job.
One problem can cross five different trades.
A roof leak can become drywall and paint.
Water damage can become flooring, cabinets, trim and reconstruction.
A bathroom remodel can involve framing, plumbing, waterproofing, tile and custom cabinetry.
A patio project can involve demolition, concrete, framing, roofing and exterior finishes.
That's why this Journal won't be about one trade either.
Because the finished surface is only the part of the project you're supposed to see.
Presented by Master Builder Construction TX.
The Contractor Journal is produced from the projects, photographs, videos and field experience behind Master Builder Construction TX.
The work spans remodeling, roofing, restoration, concrete, flooring, cabinetry, structural work and other multi-trade construction.
The Journal gives us somewhere to slow down and explain the parts of those projects that don't fit into an Instagram caption or a finished-project gallery.
When we're talking about one of our projects, we'll show you the project.
Show us what you're working with.
Text Master Builder Construction TX photos of the project, damage or problem. Include the property location and tell us what you're trying to accomplish.
